Check the density of the foam before you buy. Most foam mattress pads have a density of around 4 pounds per cubic foot. When shopping for a mattress pad specifically to go on your sofa bed look for those models with thicker foam running down the middle. This will take care of the problem with that metal bar we mentioned ealier. Most good models feature a quilted cover that gives a more luxurious feel.
Make sure the mattress pad you get has good elastic on the corners. These are for attaching the mattress pad to the sofa bed to prevent it from sliding off. Another consideration is thickness. For a mattress pad to really be effective it needs to be around 3-4″ thick. The thinner two inch ones in my experience just don’t seem to do the job. Another consideration before you buy will depend on the thickness you go for. If you do choose a particularly thick pad then you may well find that your original fitted sheets aren’t deep enough to cover the pad. If this is the case for you then you will probably be looking at buying a new set of deep pocket sheets to do the job.
